Keenan’s Memorial
A slideshow of images from a funeral for a man named Keenan.
This collection of images from Keenan’s funeral were stitched together as a thank you gift for his family. It was a way for me to share the images with his loved ones and share with them about the purpose of my work. An unexpected benefit of the slide show is that it provided the family with a tool for mourning.
His mother, Mama Linda, shared with me that they got together with his closest friends and watched it together a few times. They made copies of it and distributed it amongst his friends. She also shared that it allowed them to attend the funeral consciously because they weren’t really “present” during the actual funeral.
My goals and intentions with this work are pure and unselfish. I work to celebrate, educate and help bring healing to those left in this world when their loved ones make their transition to the next life. I am also determined to capture a visual record of the memorialization and funerary practices of the people of the West African diaspora. This is just one portion of my effort.
I don’t do it for the gram… I do it for JUSTICE!
